The Zapata County Commissioners Court is responsible for adopting the annual County budget and setting the tax rate. The County's fiscal year is Oct. 1st to Sept. 30th of each year.
The Zapata County Judge is the County's Budget Officer and prepares a recommended budget for the court's consideration. A series of workshops are held in late May between the County Judge, County Auditor's staff and elected officials, department heads, and third party agencies that receive County funding. They individually meet to review their recommended budgets and other departmental needs. Along with information provided by the Zapata County Appraisal District and the Zapata County Tax Office, the County Judge files a proposed county budget by late July or early August.
The Zapata County Commissioners Court is required to hold a public hearing on the proposed budget as well as the proposed tax rate if it will be increased more than 3%. The final budget is usually adopted by the end of August or early September each year. The Commissioners Court also sets the tax rate at this time.
