A Justice of the Peace (JP) in Texas is a judge who handles civil and criminal cases, as well as administrative hearings. They are also known as "The People's Court".
- Civil cases: Hear cases involving debts, evictions, car accidents, and property
- Criminal cases: Hear class C misdemeanors, such as traffic citations and bad check issuance
- Administrative hearings: Hear applications for mental health or chemically dependent commitments
- Warrants: Issue search and arrest warrants
- Preliminary hearings: Conduct preliminary hearings for criminal and civil cases
- Marriage ceremonies: Perform marriage ceremonies
- Inquests: Conduct inquests
- Death certificates: Complete death certificates
- Oaths: Administer oaths
- Protective orders: Handle emergency protective orders
- Coroner: Serve as coroner in counties without a medical examiner
- Be a resident of the state where you'll serve
- Be a registered voter in many states
- Have strong written and spoken communication skills
- Be able to apply the rules of law with reason and objectivity
- Have problem solving and decision making skills
