A Justice of the Peace (JP) in Texas is a judge who handles civil and criminal cases, as well as administrative hearings. They are also known as "The People's Court".
Duties
  • Civil casesHear cases involving debts, evictions, car accidents, and property
  • Criminal casesHear class C misdemeanors, such as traffic citations and bad check issuance
  • Administrative hearingsHear applications for mental health or chemically dependent commitments
  • WarrantsIssue search and arrest warrants
  • Preliminary hearingsConduct preliminary hearings for criminal and civil cases
  • Marriage ceremoniesPerform marriage ceremonies
  • InquestsConduct inquests
  • Death certificatesComplete death certificates
  • OathsAdminister oaths
  • Protective ordersHandle emergency protective orders
  • CoronerServe as coroner in counties without a medical examiner
Requirements
  • Be a resident of the state where you'll serve
  • Be a registered voter in many states
  • Have strong written and spoken communication skills
  • Be able to apply the rules of law with reason and objectivity
  • Have problem solving and decision making skills
