In Texas, judicial records are not housed in a single centralized database; each court maintains its own records. Access to these records is generally governed by Rule 12 of the Rules of Judicial Administration, with the judge usually being the custodian. Requests for inspection or copying must be in writing and directed to the custodian.

Chapter 36 of the Government Code requires the clerk of each court in the state to prepare a report every month on court appointments made and any fees approved/paid for attorney ad litem, competency evaluator, guardian, guardian ad litem, or mediator, with a few exceptions.
