Job Title: Paralegal

Job Summary:

The Paralegal for Criminal Prosecution provides administrative and legal support to attorneys handling criminal matters in the District Attorney’s Office. This position involves preparing legal documents, managing case files, coordinating with law enforcement agencies, handling sensitive information, and ensuring smooth daily operations in support of prosecutorial functions.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist attorneys with preparing, formatting, and filing legal documents including complaints, motions, subpoenas, and discovery responses.
  • Organize and maintain physical and digital case files for felony and other criminal matters.
  • Communicate professionally with law enforcement, victims, witnesses, court personnel, and the public.
  • Schedule court appearances, meetings, and interviews for attorneys.
  • Request, track, and manage discovery materials (police reports, video/audio evidence, lab reports, etc.).
  • Draft routine correspondence, memoranda, and reports under the direction of legal staff.
  • Enter and update case information in the case management system.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding all case-related and office matters.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the District Attorney or their designee.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or paralegal certificate preferred.
  • Prior experience working in a legal or criminal justice environment strongly preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of legal terminology and criminal court procedures.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and case management software.
  • Ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines, and manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment in handling sensitive matters.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

  • Standard office environment with frequent computer and telephone use.
  • Occasional lifting of files or office supplies (up to 25 lbs).
  • May be required to attend court proceedings and meetings during normal business hours.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must pass a criminal background check.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license may be required.
  • Drug screening may be required as a condition of employment.

HIRING PROCESS: (Basic requirements to qualify for licensure as a Detention Officer in Texas)

  • Citizen of the United States of America.
  • Earned a high school diploma or a GED.
  • Have never been convicted, pled guilty, nor have been on court-ordered community service/probation or deferred adjudication for a Class A misdemeanor or a felony.
  • During the last 10 years, have not been convicted, pled guilty, been on community service/probation or deferred adjudication for a Class B misdemeanor in this state, other state, or while serving in the military.
  • Have never had a military court martial that resulted in a dishonorable or bad conduct discharge.
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver's License at the time of hiring for the position.

Applicants are responsible for maintaining control of the inmate population and responsible for the care, feeding and housing of the inmates. Jailers must have good communication and writing skills, be able to work in high stress environments and maintain good physical fitness to perform the duties. Jailers must be able to interact professionally with the public and can multi-task when the jail gets busy. Applicants must be able to satisfactorily complete state required jail school and maintain their jail license through in-service training throughout their career. All training is provided at no cost to the applicant. Applicant must pass a state mandated physical, drug test and psychological evaluation at no charge to the applicant before being hired.
