The Howard County Magistrate Court is staffed by four associate Judges who serve under the direction of the District and County Judges in Howard County. A Magistrate determines whether there is sufficient justification to hold a defendant in custody, issues legal warnings to individuals facing criminal charges, establishes bail, establishes bond conditions, issues search and arrest warrants, issues emergency protection orders, issues peace bonds and conducts examining trials. Magistrates hold hearings 365 days per year to ensure that each arrestee is informed of their rights and charges. Associate Judges, acting as Magistrates, DO NOT determine guilt or innocence and cannot provide legal advice.
